CF08-S06: AI Application Vulnerability Remediation

AI Control Library / CF-08: Testing & Robustness

Designation: Supplemental | Control types represented: Operational and Technical

Control requirement

Remediate AI application vulnerabilities through owned engineering work, controlled changes, deployment verification and regression testing. Coordinate application fixes with broader AI-system exposure and shared dependencies.

Why this matters

A system-level finding may require changes in multiple applications. This control ensures that the software correction is actually delivered and does not reopen the flaw through an alternate endpoint or regression.

How the control types work together

Operational controls define scope, authority and the actions required when conditions are not met. Technical controls produce evidence or enforce the relevant boundaries. Both must apply to the same deployment and operating conditions.

When it applies

Application code, configuration, interfaces and deployment dependencies affected by security findings in AI workflows.

Define the assessed boundary, dependencies and evidence limitations. Tailor depth and review frequency to potential impact, and document why a particular safeguard or exclusion is appropriate to the actual deployment.

Ownership

The application owner delivers correction with security verification and release management.

Implementation guidance

  1. Link each application defect to the affected path, version, system-level risk and interim protection.
  2. Design a fix that addresses the root security boundary, adding appropriate negative and regression tests.
  3. Review and release the correction through controlled delivery, reconciling all affected instances and dependencies.
  4. Retest the original and related paths in the deployed configuration and retain evidence for coordinated finding closure.

How to verify it

Use representative records and authorized controlled tests. Identify the relevant version, operating conditions and expected result before testing, and retain enough evidence to support the conclusion.

Test Expected result
Trace a code fix The affected deployed instances actually use the correction.
Exercise the original failure path The required boundary now holds.
Test an alternate interface It does not retain the same untreated weakness.

Record a finding when required results cannot be demonstrated or practice differs materially from the approved conditions. Missing evidence limits the conclusion; it should not be treated as a successful test.

Evidence to retain

  • Application defect and scope
  • Reviewed fix and tests
  • Deployment reconciliation
  • Retest and closure evidence

Protect evidence according to its sensitivity, access needs and retention rules. Avoid unnecessary copies of personal information, secrets or confidential material, while preserving the records needed for authorized review.

If the control fails

Escalate incomplete rollout, failed regression or repeated flaws to application and security owners. Maintain containment until the relevant deployed paths are corrected.

Example in practice

Hypothetical example: A tenant-isolation fix protects the chat API but not the export worker. Application remediation keeps the finding open until both paths are patched and tested.

Review and maintenance

Review at the interval approved by the control owner and after relevant changes, incidents or failed assessments. Update affected procedures and configuration, address evidence gaps and verify corrective action before closing findings.
